I've never been a fan of writing, nor have I ever had the urge to start a blog . . . until now. On the contrary I've always rather been opposed to such things. In my mind once you start a blog you are doomed to become the busy soccer mom and PTA president who has to find the time to make that jello salad for Saturday night's ward party and organize a play date with the neighbor kids. . . not that that's a bad thing, I just don't know that I'm ready for all that yet. Not to mention I've never really felt like my life is that exciting; I'm not sure that I do anything or have anything to say that people will really care about reading.
So why would I want to start a blog you may ask? Simple. I have a problem. It's called, "I'm not good at finishing things". After completing five long years of engineering school and getting a job as a Civil Engineer at a small firm in Salt Lake, I felt like the creative side of me had been completely squashed. I wanted to restore some balance to my life, so I decided to pursue my interest in photography and convinced my wonderful husband that I needed a DSLR camera. I didn't want the camera to become a glorified point-and-shoot always on automatic mode; I was determined to understand the true meaning of aperture and ISO and learn how to take beautiful photographs. I bought a couple basic photography books and started studying. I even signed up for an online course through the New York Institute of Photography. I was determined to follow through. I was motivated. And things were going well. I made it to chapter six. And then I had a baby. And I quit my job. And my life turned upside down. Fast forward a year and a half later and my fancy DSLR mostly sits in its case and rarely gets used on anything but automatic mode, and the photography class is still not completed. . .
So in honor of the New Year, I have resolved to finish my photography class and practice what I learn by taking at least one picture a day. Since posting a picture a day seems somewhat overwhelming, and I'm not sure that anyone really cares to see 365 pictures of my daily life, I have decided to post the best photo of the week. It is my hope that I will feel accountable to my so far non-existent followers and will actually follow through on this project. I have no idea what direction I will take, or what I will photograph, but hopefully it will be an adventure for us all.
Have a fantastic New Year everyone!
